I’ve been a confirmation teacher for fifteen years now, and honestly, there’s not much that surprises me anymore. For example, when I ask, “Who is the Apostle Paul?” I usually get this answer: “Some guy in the Bible.” If I ask, “Who was Noah’s wife?” the answer back is often “Joan of Arc.” Or when I ask if anyone has started to write their Statement of Faith, I usually hear: “What? You were serious about that?” I’ve come to expect such deep theological answers from my students. No, I’m not usually surprised by my students.
But this year, Tommy actually surprised me. Tommy, who helped God create the universe? (Aliens!) Tommy, who helped Noah get all the animals on the ark? (Aliens!) Tommy, who helped Jesus feed the five thousand? (Aliens!) You get the idea! Tommy has this obsession with aliens! At every class we heard something about aliens. So, when it came time to preach on this Confirmation Sunday, what else could I talk about? So to answer your question, “Yes, Tommy, there really are aliens!” I have conclusive, biblical proof that there are aliens among us. In fact, we are the aliens.
